    Description

This is a rare programme (playbill) from the March 17th, 1873 St. Patrick's Day performance of the EDMUND FALCONER Irish Drama "EILEEN OGE" (or "Dark's the Hour Before the Dawn") at the historic Globe Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts ..... The Globe Theatre, located on Washington Street, between Essex Street and Hayward Place, was first called Selwyn's Theatre. It was built about 1867 for the Boston Amusement Company, by Dexter H. Follet, as a rival to the famous Museum. Under the management of John Selwyn, who had been a scene painter and actor, a fine stock company was maintained. After his death the house was renamed the Globe and was managed for a number of years by Arthur Cheney, one of the original owners. After Mr. Cheney gave up the house in 1877 John Stetson took the lease for a year, and this was renewed in 1878. He managed the house successfully until it was destroyed by a New Year's Day fire in 1894. Many of the most popular stars and combinations played there. Its seating capacity was 2,200 larger than that of any other house in Boston except the enormous Boston Theatre ..... The cast of "EILEEN OGE" included Mr. W. R. FLOYD, Mr. W. E. SHERIDAN, Mr. C. W. COULDOCK, Mr. LESLIE ALLEN, Mr. H. F. DALY, Mr. H. DAVIES, Mr. J. B. FULLER, Mr. F. THROCKMORTON, Mr. J. H. CONNER, Mr. WILLIS, Mr. C. E. CRESWICK, Mr. G. CONNER, Mr. G. LEVICK, Mr. A. ALDRICH, Mr. R. SCALLION, Mr. ACKERMAN, Mr. D. BURNS, Mr. D. S. HARKINS, Mrs. THOMAS BARRY, Miss JOSIE ORTON, Mrs. T. M. HUNTER, Mrs. A. HIND and Miss LIZZIE HUNT ..... CREDITS: Book by EDMUND FALCONER; Globe Theatre Manager: W. R. FLOYD; Proprietor: ARTHUR CHENEY ..... PROGRAM DETAILS: The four page program measures 8 3/8" X 11 1/2" inches and includes cast list, beautiful cover graphics, promotional text and wonderful vintage advertising, but no cast photos or bios ..... CONDITION: (Please Note!) This program was beautifully preserved for over 130 years in a bound volume with all the subsequent programmes from the 1872-73 season (the other programs were sold separately). As a result, most of the programs show wear along the seam where the programs were originally stitched together. This program is worn through at the seam, otherwise it is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
