Les Herauts Heralds Queen Artemisia French Renaissance Wall Tapestry 55" x 58"

Description

This is a jacquard loom tapestry which was sold by Corona Decor of Washington state, but I believe it was made in France and rebranded by them. It is one of a set of tapestries called "Artemisia" which were woven in the early XVIIth century and are now part of the Mobilier National in France. It represents heralds, or messengers telling people that Artemisia, queen of Halicarnassus, has decided to call the assembly. Famous for her bravery and military accomplishments, she was said by the Persian king Xerxes I to have fought like a man whilst the rest of his fleet had fought like women during the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC. The tapestry was commissioned by Marie de Medicis (1573 - 1642), the queen consort of France. The back is lined with a black fabric, and there is a rod pocket at the top. The rod pictured is not included, but you can see how I had it hung on the wall in the last picture. The size is roughly 55" x 58", and I believe it to be a wool/cotton blend. It sells for 0+ new.
