condition for display, parts and/or repair
. For the past several decades, this axe has been displayed, alongside other antique tools, as a decorative wall hanger in my garage. Now, I am currently in the process of downsizing and removing many of the antique and/or vintage tools from the wall and will be listing them a piece or two at a time until they are all sold. If you collect antique/vintage tools please look at the other tools I may have listed at this time.
This Plumb hand axe is made out of heavy steel with a hickory wood handle. The axe weighs approximately 2.50 pounds. The axe has an overall length of approximately 16.0". The steel axe head measures approximately 5.75" long and 2-5/8" wide
at the (butt) end
and 3-5/8" wide at the sharp cutting edge (bit) end. One side of the axe "face" is stamped with the manufacturer's brand name "PLUMB", the reverse side of the axe "face" is stamped with the words "MADE IN U.S.A.".
This axe has been in my family for as long as I can remember and has always been a wall hanger among my other antique and vintage tools that hung in our garage for decades.
The axe has a "tear drop" shaped "eye" where the wood handle comes through and is secured to the axe head. Note, the "eye" opening has a slightly bent edge (seen on the bottom) as pictured in description photo #9. The "butt" end of the axe head shows to have rolled edges (see close up photo # 6) from having been hammered repeatedly throughout the years while being used to split wood logs. The axe's cutting edge or "bit" end is dull (see photo #5) from use and does not currently have any sharpness remaining. The curved grip hickory wood handle has been cracked in the middle (see close up photos #10 and 11) and was repaired back in the day. This repair predates my possession so I am estimating it is well over 50 years old. Nevertheless, this repair is a genuine "period" repair that exemplifies the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the old timers. The repair appears to consist of a wire wrapping covered with black electrical tape. The hickory handle is loosely fitted on to the axe head but remains securely affixed as I cannot easily remove it. The aforementioned notwithstanding the handle would need to be replaced if the new owner ever desired to "safely" use the hand axe as it was originally designed and intended for. Overall, this hand axe is a wonderful looking vintage tool that makes a beautiful visual display.
The axe head has acquired decades of light surface oxidation, rust and a natural patina from having been displayed upon the wall in my garage/workshop. The axe head shows honest age and extensive use. Please refer to the description photos to confirm the condition of the hand axe and for more details about what I have described.
Since the axe was relegated as a wall hanger for many decades, I was never compelled to clean it as I believed it looked great the way it currently exists and presents. Although I believe, if the wood handle was replaced, the hand axe would once again perform properly as it was designed, I considered this tool to be a wall decor piece and not for actual daily use. Please refer to the close up photos for more details about what I have described.
This vintage Plumb hand axe is a wonderful looking piece of American history, ingenuity and craftsmanship and will make a beautiful display alongside anyone's antique and/or vintage tool collection.
